Looking for a way to beat the Florida heat this summer? You're in luck. Central Florida is home to some of the most beautiful freshwater springs in the world, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and relaxing with family and friends. In fact, Florida has more freshwater springs than anywhere else on the planet, and many of the best are right in our own backyard.
Whether you're a local looking for a weekend escape or visiting from out of town, the natural springs near DeLand offer the perfect way to cool off. Here are a few of my favorites.
Blue Spring State Park is a natural gem known for its crystal-clear water, abundant wildlife, and peaceful surroundings. Located in Orange City, just a short drive from DeLand, this spring is the largest on the St. Johns River. It pumps out over 100 million gallons of water each day and stays a refreshing 72 degrees year-round.
During the cooler months, Blue Spring becomes a refuge for manatees, making it a popular spot for wildlife viewing. In the summer, it is a favorite destination for swimming, tubing, snorkeling, and kayaking. The park also features hiking trails, picnic areas, and a scenic boardwalk that runs along the spring run.
De Leon Springs State Park, located just north of DeLand, features a second-magnitude spring that produces approximately 19 million gallons of water each day. Like Blue Spring, the water maintains a steady temperature of 72 degrees year-round, offering a refreshing break from the Florida heat.
The swimming area ranges from 18 inches to 30 feet deep and is perfect for families. Snorkeling is allowed within the designated swimming area, giving visitors the chance to see native fish and aquatic plants up close.
One of the park's most unique attractions is the Old Sugar Mill Pancake House. Set in a replica of a 100-year-old sugar mill, the restaurant lets guests cook their own pancakes at the table using griddles built right in. It is a fun and memorable experience that makes De Leon Springs a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. The restaurant is open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and is especially popular on weekends.
Nestled between Blue Spring and De Leon Springs is the charming town of DeLand. Often called "The Athens of Florida," DeLand is known for its historic architecture, thriving arts scene, and outdoor recreation. Located in Volusia County, it is about 34 miles north of Orlando and 23 miles west of Daytona Beach.
DeLand is a great base for exploring nearby springs and also offers plenty to do in town. From local restaurants and coffee shops to galleries, parks, and events, it is a destination in its own right. Whether you're looking for a quiet getaway or a place to explore between spring visits, DeLand has something for everyone.
These are just a few of the incredible springs near DeLand, and there are many more worth exploring across Central Florida. Stay tuned for future blog posts where I'll highlight more hidden gems and local favorites.
See you on the trail!
